SciAps LIBS can do small parts because of our small aperture and well designed argon purge
The SciAps LIBS (laser) unit is especially designed for handling curved surfaces and small parts. The device uses a small exit aperture and a patented argon purge/bleed design so that a good purge is achieved but without requiring a seal to the material surface. The device is widely used by Asia suppliers to measure carbon content to verify L-grade analysis in small components of varying sizes and abstract shapes that they make for western technology companies.
Here’s a story from our applications manager in Asia Pacific. A Taiwan customer recently trained to use the LIBS Z-200 C+ to analyze their small components. The device is widely used by Asia suppliers to measure carbon content to verify 316L vs 316 stainless in small components they make for western technology companies. There are many customers in Asia looking to do L grade analysis on varying sample sizes and abstract shapes.
From SciAps applications manager: “Since many of their components are very small, the Z-200 C+ helps reduce lab costs by rapidly screening incoming material that previously could not be done without a laboratory. These components are quite small and are a testing challenge using traditional methods of L-grade identification. As long as they are able to grind the samples, they are able to get accurate results for L-grade stainless steel and reduce the number of samples they send back to the laboratory for verification.”

SciAps Z-200 C+ is a unique tool for manufacturing. The instrument needs very little preparation time to accurately test down to 0.008% carbon in stainless steel. A short instrument warm up (< 15 mins) and a simple grind to the surface is all that is needed to start the analysis. Unlike with other other techniques, testing these samples requires no special probe heads and calibration standards.
The customer was able to absorb their training quickly, and have become experts in testing even the most minute samples.
SciAps marketing and product development teams are veterans of Niton, Innov-X, ThermoFisher Scientific, and Olympus and bring decades of experience to developing and supporting handheld analyzers for every industry. Everything we do is industry-driven. With the Z-200 C+, incoming QC of extremely small samples is quite simple. The unique design and software of the Z-200 C+ has expanded the testing operations of this customer.
