Discover SciAps all-new LIBS technology family with Z-900 Series
Get the carbon analysis you needIf you already have a handheld XRF unit, the Z-901 CSi just made it about $10,000 less expensive to get the carbon and silicon numbers you need. The Z-901 Dual-burn can operate with or without argon. And the Z-902 Carbon is the new heavy-hitting, fully calibrated analyzer for carbon and metals.
SciAps, Inc., a Boston-based company specializing in handheld analytical instrumentation, is pleased to introduce at Aluminum USA, Fabtech and Heat Treat their new generation SciAps Z-900 series handheld LIBS analyzers. Similar to their new XRF platform, the Z-900 series features an all-new ergonomic design, a 0.5 lb. weight reduction down to about 3.5 lbs. (1.6 kg), improved heat dissipation, and completely updated software and processing electronics.
With a whole new form factor, the new LIBS units are better balanced, narrower, with a tapered snout for easier access to welds and hard-to-reach places and feature a rear-facing display that provides easy viewing. The analyzer is much faster than anything on the market, with initial results displaying in one second. The Z-901 also comes with desktop/tablet software allowing users to add elements and generate custom calibrations.
“We’ve taken all the knowledge we’ve learned about LIBS technology over the past five years and completely updated the unit – making it lighter and faster with a great new user interface. And now we’re offering this revolutionary dual-burn option that nobody else has,” says Don Sackett, CEO and co-founder of SciAps, Inc.
SciAps also offers the X-550 XRF analyzer. Designed specifically for the NDT/PMI markets, the X-550 is the world's lightest, fastest X-ray gun. The most powerful X-ray tube delivers best speed on Si for sulfidic corrosion, and fastest analysis of P, S, Mg, Al and Si in general, and superior performance for low atomic number measurement applications including sulfidic corrosion, sulfur and phosphorus. User-friendly apps provide residuals analysis per API 751 and 5L specifications. The X-555 uses the latest software, materials and engineering for improved performance in high ambient temperatures and outstanding heat dissipation.“With the pandemic-driven shutdowns and travel restrictions, 2020 was a tough year. But rather than cutting our budget, we invested in technology so that when things opened up again, we’d have something great to offer our customers. We’re really excited to launch the new family of LIBS products,” Sackett says.
One Box: True portability and optimal performance costs less than comparable spark OES.

SciAps breakthrough LIBS technology is accepted at most every major refinery, and in use worldwide by fabricators, pipeline owner/operators, power plants and other users of carbon steels and L- and H-grade stainless. And it delivers microanalysis capability with 100 um laser spot size — even non-destructive tube end analysis.
SciAps is a rapidly growing company specializing in handheld analytical instruments. State-of-the-art handheld LIBS analyzers for alloys address carbon in steels and stainless, environmental, mining, and general analytical applications, specifically those that require measurement of low atomic number elements not accessible by handheld XRF. Complementing the LIBS is SciAps latest handheld XRF series. The X-500 Series is the smallest, lightest weight, and highest performing handheld XRF units ever created.
