How does our patented argon purge work?

The laser beam in our Z is only about 50 um diameter. Compare that to the size of a spark burn. We raster the laser to several locations during testing, since averaging multiple laser burns is critical for accuracy with LIBS. The analysis area is very small – a few hundred mm2. This means the purge volume is very small. Thus the pre-purge is quick – a second. And between tests the argon can be turned off – unlike OES. The result is that the Z-200C+ uses about 1,000 times less argon than a typical spark OES. So you get hundreds of test out of that tiny canister that is available globally, and costs a few bucks.

Current carbon applications using the Z-200C+:

    • •   Carbon equivalents. The Z analyzes carbon and the needed transition metals to calculate CE with a variety of formulas.
    • •   Residuals done right! Now measure the carbon content AND Cu, Cr and Ni. The Z automatically switches residual formula based on carbon %. Either Cu + Cr + Ni or just Cu + Ni.
    • •   Sulfidic corrosion? The Z will also measure Si down to 0.02%.
